Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park, London
People have been sharing their views at Hyde Park's Speakers' Corner since the mid 1800's. You can turn up and speak whenever you want, but if you would like an audience then Sunday afternoon (from 2 to 4pm) is the best time to get on your soap box. This is the time I usually visit, to record the people and issues being discussed each week...
These images are part of an ongoing project looking at the people who visit Speakers’ Corner on any Sunday afternoon. My interest is in the speakers and what they have to say; but also their supporters and of course the public who come to hear what is being said.
Anyone can come along and speak and you will be left alone by the Police as long as you don’t break the law with what you say, or the way you say it. Chances are you will find those who agree with you and those who don't and if you choose to speak you should expect your share of heckling and arguments.
As time passes the project is growing and changing, it will continue to grow into a lasting tribute to the very visible centre of London’s free speech. I hope that my photography comes across as fairly even handed. While I may hold strong views on many of the topics discussed at Speakers' Corner this page is not the place to air them!
If you would like to meet up to photograph at Speakers’ Corner, please get in touch.
